Perched high on the cliffs overlooking the remains of Hallsands (viewing platform) is Prospect House. It was built by two extraordinary local sisters to become a legendary hotel – now 16 smart apartments with stunning ocean views across to the dramatic lighthouse at Start Point and along the coast to Dartmouth. To the front and back are communal gardens, a heated outdoor swimming pool (31' x 15' x 4'3'' to 5'10'' deep, open 8am to 8pm, Whitsun Bank Holiday to 30 September) and tennis courts.

We have a ground floor apartment, elegantly furnished in New England coastal style with an eye to detail by interior designer owner. Open porch (for boots/outdoor gear) into light, sunny living/dining/fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, fridge-freezer) with TV/DVD and lovely long sea views to the lighthouse through bay windows. Two attractive bedrooms – a double (5’ bed) with en suite shower-room (suite) and French windows to small terrace (table/chairs) with tranquil views of hilly meadows, and a twin; bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). No children under 5. Best for maximum of 3 adults, 1 child. Stunning apartment in a stunning location.

The perfect cliff top retreat to escape the madding crowds. Where else can you walk in one direction to a working lighthouse with spectacular views and the other on the coastal path to local beaches with friendly locals and the best fish and chips ever. Start Bay Look Out was a luxury base to explore the estuaries and unspoilt Devon coastline. Cream teas, fresh seafood, lots of rock pooling and nights under the stars with the lighthouse beaming, it doesn't get better than this for good family fun!
