Greek hideaways are now quite hard to come by. Gone are the days of the car free islands, with donkeys and carts and a 36 hour journey to reach your destination by various boats and with the odd fisherman. But small pockets of this seclusion and true island life still exist, even if the car is king everywhere. One such place is Gaios on Paxos, the capital ‘city’ or village where the boats come in from Corfu to ferry you to this superb holiday destination, away from it all.

Set within the hills overlooking Gaios is this private villa, one of three holiday homes in the hamlet, sleeping four people, giving the best views on the island overlooking the stretch of sand and sea at the tiny harbour. The tranquillity of the area would be spoilt with loud touristic attractions, but eating and drinking can still be raucous affairs here, as the guitars come out when the locals join you in the restaurants on a balmy summer evening and the wine flows for so long that you can no longer taste it - whoever said this was the quiet life?
