General

one mile seaward of Rosudgeon is Acton Castle, commanding the peninsula between Stackhouse Cove (200 yards walk away, low-tide sand) and Prussia Cove, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. While on St Michael’s Mount in 1772, the romantic but rheumatic seaweed expert, John Stackhouse, spotted the site for his wedding present to his betrothed, Susanna Acton. Built of granite, Grade II listed, it has formal gardens and lawns, terraces and sunken garden with pond and sensational sea views, including of St Michael’s Mount. Private rough drive to it. Farmland all round. Coast path. The castle is now divided into apartments. We have four.

On the castle’s ground floor, an extremely interesting apartment with stunning sea views (all ground floor of the left wing, arrow 3). Slate-floored hall, cloakroom (loo/washbasin, pretty tiles). A marvellous huge living/dining/kitchen (38’ x 17’) with two stone mullioned windows looking seaward; slate floor with rugs and a hexagonal wooden centre, big stone fireplace with ‘living flame’ electric fire, 4' futon/sofa, books, games, TV/DVD. Well-equipped kitchen area – lovely kitchen sink sea views (across Mount’s Bay to Mousehole) - with dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, small freezer, halogen hob. Two bedrooms – a double, and a blue and white single with pull-out truckle bed. Bathroom (suite plus hand-shower).

Guest Comments

This apartment at Acton Castle was fantastic, 5 star accomodation in a glorious setting with wonderful views, it was hard to tear ourselves away from the apartment and its grounds to explore the area, but we managed it and found a really nice pub that did fab food at the Victoria Inn in Perranuthnoe, we actually walked to it along the coast path. Would most definitely recommend staying at Acton Castle to anyone. - Lesley Knowles
