General

This cottage is one of the most famous properties in Sennen Cove with a varied and illustrious history ranging from smuggling to socialite parties in the early 40’s. Built in the late 1800’s and perched in a unique position right on the very edge of the cliffs overlooking the glorious stretch of beach that makes up Whitesands Bay, the cottage began life as a local seafarer’s home. Legend has it that the owner – who was not adverse to a little smuggling on the side - had a vested interest in the Old Success pub down in the cove which certainly came in handy when trying to sell his contraband! Later on it was owned by a fisherman who would regularly ride his mule along the cliff top paths to the fishing village of Porthleven – a distance of 21 miles! - where he would load up his animal with Withies (a Cornish term for willow sticks) which was used to construct the early lobster pots. He would then stay the night in a local hostelry and journey back the following day with a hangover! In the roaring forties, it was owned by the Val Bakers (Denys and Jess) who were extremely well known socialites within UK literary and ceramic circles.

Today, the cottage has been completely renovated for the first time in over forty years to produce a really gorgeous holiday home in a truly fabulous setting. The vast expanse of the might Atlantic Ocean stretching out into the Western Approaches can be seen from virtually every room of this beautiful granite cottage or you can relax on the side patio, sip a glass of chilled white wine and take in the stunning views over the cove and beach. The interior appointment of the cottage is perfectly balanced with extensive use of natural wood and open granite walls together with stylish and contemporary shower rooms and kitchen. At the front of the property is a footpath and a five minute walk will bring you into the hearty of the cove, the lifeboat station, pub and village shops however the journey back may take a little longer if you have spent some time in The Old Success Inn! – A further five minute walk in the other direction will give you access to the South West Coastal Path where you can amble along the magnificent cliff tops to the iconic attraction of Land’s End with its various amenities and the Land’s End Hotel – perfect for that long overdue pint!
