One of Cornwall’s favourite self-catering beach holiday destinations is Falmouth as it has five sandy beaches, a thriving city center and a harbour full of sailboats from far and wide. For the history buffs there is the 450 year old twin fortresses of Pendennis and St. Mawes, which were built by Henry VIII to protect England from Spanish and French invasion, or you can simply immerse yourself in the town’s thriving restaurant and pub scene. Four of Falmouth’s five beaches are within a 15 minute walk of the city centre. There is also the “Falmouth Explorer” bus that offers journeys along all the beaches which is popular for many holidaymakers staying in Falmouth cottages. Castle Beach which is on Pendennis Head, is a pebble beach which is great for snorkeling. Castle Beach is the most northerly of all of the Falmouth beaches. The northern end of the beach is very rocky, although there are scattered areas of sand, which makes it ideal for finding a private spot. During low tide, Tunnel Beach connects Castle Beach with Gyllyngvase Beach.
